Securing your data in cyberspace can be a daunting task, but one you must try to stay on top of.
The 2016 Virginia Cyber Convention & Expo on Oct. 6 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center aims to help provide the knowledge and expertise needed to protect against cyber intrusion and hacking attacks.
Presented by Cyber Protection Resources and sponsored by the Virginia Beach Department of Economic Development, the event is expected to attract more than 500 cyber leaders throughout the industry.
During the event, which starts at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 5 p.m., there will be exhibits, networking opportunities, a variety of break-out sessions, and a panel of speakers including retired Adm. Bill Gortney, Lance Hayden of Berkeley Research Group, FBI Agent Robert Cochran, Scott Schober of Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Stephen Watkins of G2 Ops Inc., Heather Engel of Sera-Brynn and Darek Dabbs of Sera-Brynn.
Kevin Mitnick, aka “World’s Most Famous Hacker,” is the keynote speaker and will talk about methods cyber criminals use to gain access to personal data. His presentation, “Art of Deception: How Hackers and Con Artists Manipulate You and What You Can Do About it” begins at 10 a.m.
Mitnick -- best known as partner, part owner and chief hacking officer of KnowBe4, a cybersecurity training firm -- was indeed a hacker who has since used his knowledge to help others.
The 12 break-out sessions will include information on cyber educational opportunities in Virginia, cyber insurance, new legislation and contract language on cyber security, how hackers access networks and how to make your home or business secure from hackers.
A special session will focus on the new 160 terabyte/second undersea broadband fiber link being built to connect Spain with a landing site in Virginia Beach.
Tickets are $200 for general admission, $150 military and $55 for students.
